2016 Antitrust Lawyer of the Year
Mr. Griffin is a nationally recognized antitrust lawyer and has been involved in many of the largest and most significant antitrust cases filed in the past 45 years. In 2016, the State Bar of California honored Mr. Griffin as the “Antitrust Lawyer of the Year.” U.S. News & World Report has named him a "Tier 1 Antitrust Lawyer" and Paul Griffin Law as one of the "Best Law Firms in Texas, First Tier Ranking." He was a leader of the litigation team awarded the “2015 Team of the Year” in Cartel Defense by The Legal 500 and was “highly recommended” by Global Competition Review. Mr. Griffin has served as Liaison Counsel in major antitrust class action litigation. He has been selected as one of the "Best Lawyers in America" every year since 2008 and as a "Super Lawyer" every year since 2004.
Mr. Griffin is a co-author of the treatise California Antitrust and Unfair Competition Law. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Antitrust, Unfair Competition and Privacy Section of the State Bar of California, now known as the California Lawyers Association, and currently serves as an Advisor to the Executive Committee of that section. He has been featured in three front-page articles in the San Francisco Recorder and Los Angeles Daily Journal and has appeared, been interviewed and quoted numerous times on television and radio about legal cases and issues.
Mr. Griffin began his legal career as a staff attorney with the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. where he prosecuted merger, antitrust and unfair competition cases. Following his stint in government, Mr. Griffin went into private practice in San Francisco and became a capital partner successively at three AmLaw 100 firms: Pillsbury Winthrop (1984-2004), Thelen (2004-2008) and Winston & Strawn (2008-2019). At those firms, he served as Chair, Vice Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, of their Global Antitrust & Competition practices.
Mr. Griffin has represented clients in trials and litigation related to price fixing, conspiracy, grand jury investigations, merger analyses and challenges, price discrimination, monopolization, supplier-distributor disputes, terminated agent cases, international and domestic arbitration and mediation, joint ventures and partnership disputes, trade secret matters, oil royalty claims, product liability, and copyright and trademark infringement.
In 2016, Mr. Griffin and his wife moved to Horseshoe Bay in the Texas Hill Country west of Austin. In 2019, he retired from big firm practice and began operating as a solo practitioner. He is admitted to practice in Texas and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (Austin), in addition to the California state and Federal courts, the U.S. Supreme Court, and others.
